Sermon: Not quite the God we know
Their relationship with this God was so intimate and immediate that they could imagine God sending them quails to eat in the evening and bread in the morning (Exodus 16:13-16); they could imagine the Lord being so hurt by their rejection that God needed to be talked out of killing them. As I have said so many times this year, the religion created by the Jewish followers of Jesus is an inclusive Israel gathered from all the nations of the world. The character of the Lord in today’s story is not identical with the God we worship, but this sense of intimacy between God and God’s people is ours too. Continue reading

Sermon: The sweetness of the law, the saltiness of the prophets
The first antithesis deals with the most basic commandment of the law, the one with which no one, whether Jewish, Christian, of another faith or none, could argue – you shall not murder. Easy. I do not imagine that many preachers spend much time convincing congregation members that committing murder is a bad thing to do, although if any of you are thinking of doing it, please let me know. Sermon: Choose to believe – at the core of the cosmos is love
… why not make the choice to believe that the Creator of the cosmos loves us, that love is at the core of the universe, and that God has come as close to us as a next-of-kin, as this psalm tells us? If we hold on to this, then we can look up at heavens and the firmament and believe that we are just as important to God as they are. Continue reading
